Heartworm Disease is a serious disease that is treatable – but costly. It requires patience, time, and dedication. Once treatment is complete, it is important to avoid future recurrences by administering a monthly heartworm preventative.
PCPA partners with Dr. Ryan Cate and his caring staff at Riverstone Companion Animal Clinic in Brock, TX to provide the treatment for our shelter dogs that test positive for heartworms. The entire treatment takes from 4-6 months. PCPA pays for all the costs for the heartworm treatment at Riverstone. Any other veterinary costs, at Riverstone or at any veterinary clinic is the responsibility of the owner.
Here’s what to expect with your dog while undergoing the treatment:
PCPA member will contact you and inform Riverstone that a HW positive dog has been adopted.
**NOTE: Shelter dogs are given names upon intake, or if owner surrendered, their existing name is attached to their paperwork. IF you decide to change the dog’s name, please let PCPA know, this can get confusing during the treatment phase with numerous dogs and name changes. **
PCPA member will go over the protocol and answer any questions you may have for us, regarding the program.
Adopter will contact Riverstone (info below) and make an appointment for their new dog, as well as future appointments for the program.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU SHOW UP FOR ALL APPOINTMENTS, IF UNABLE TO DO SO, CONTACT PCPA AND RIVERSTONE TO RE-SCHEDULE OR IF NEEDED, TRY AND FIND TRANSPORTATION FOR THE DOG TO MAKE THE APPOINTMENT. COMMUNICATION IS IMPERATIVE FOR THE TIMELINESS AND COST EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR PROGRAM.
The staff at Riverstone will explain the protocol for the heartworm treatment and answer any questions you may have. Understanding the exercise restrictions and safeguards for your dog are very important, so ask any questions if there is anything unclear.
They will prescribe prescriptions for your dog as well as set up future appointments for you.
